Latin American lectures begin

LEWISTON — Davíd Carrasco, a Mexican American historian of religions, offers the inaugural lecture in Bates College’s Latin American studies program at 4:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, in the Keck Classroom, Room G52 in Pettengill Hall, 4 Andrews Road (Alumni Walk).

Titled “Origins, Cities and Crossroads: Latin American Studies Through the Lens of a Colonial Mexican Map,” the talk is open to the public at no cost. Refreshments will be provided. For more information, call 207-786-8204.

Fiddlehead Center open houses

GRAY — Open houses will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 18 and 25, at Fiddlehead Art & Science Center, 25 Shaker Road. Private tours can also be arranged.

It’s not too late to sign up for after-school classes, offered as individual sessions or five days a week.

Preschool for ages 3 to 5 has half- and full-day options.

Legion Post 22 meets Sept. 19

LEWISTON — Post 22 American Legion-Lewiston will hold its monthly membership meet at 6 p.m. sharp on Thursday, Sept. 19, in the Senior Citizens Room at the Lewiston Armory, 65 Central Ave.

Unit 22 Auxiliary will meet at 5:15 p.m.

There will be a 50/50 raffle and several prizes. Unit 22 will serve a light buffet.

Dues for 2014 membership can be paid at the meeting.

A special segment of the meeting will be to remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

Class planned on Advanced Excel

AUBURN — The Corporate and Community Services Department at Central Maine Community College will offer Advanced Excel: Functions and Data Analysis from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. Deadline for registration is Sept. 20.

This one-day, hands-on course teaches the basics of building custom, nested and 3D formulas; how to use powerful Excel functions such as IF, AND, OR and VLOOKUP to create “smart” spreadsheets; how to create and use named ranges; and how to use Excel’s table function to manage lists. The course will cover how to analyze and extract custom information using the SUMIF, COUNTIF, AVERAGEIF, DGET and DSUM functions, and pivot tables. Participants will also learn how to create dynamic charts from raw spreadsheet data.

CMMC class for boiler operators

AUBURN — The Corporate and Community Services Department at Central Maine Community College will offer a class for high pressure boiler operators from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, Sept. 24 to Dec. 10. The cost is $475 and includes books and materials.

This non-credit course offers a practical approach to power plant operation and is designed to prepare students for the State of Maine high pressure boiler operator licensing exam. Some experience in the field is required in order to sit for this exam. Free prostate cancer screening offered

LEWISTON — St. Mary’s hospital will offer free prostate screening with Dr. Michael Parker from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the LePage Center, 99 Campus Ave., Suite 401. No appointment is necessary, and walk-ins will be accepted.

Prostate Cancer often has no symptoms but if it is not caught until it has spread it is very difficult to treat successfully. One way to know about the health of the prostate is through annual physicals.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and the Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer will be there offering light refreshments and will distribute informational material.

Library writing competition

TOPSHAM — Topsham Public Library is accepting applications for its annual writing competition, The Joy of the Pen. The Joy of the Pen is free to enter for year-round Maine residents, both amateur and professional.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. Applications may be obtained at the library, at 25 Foreside Road, or by emailing emma@topshamlibrary.org. The deadline for submission of applications is Oct. 10.

A reception and reading will be held on Nov. 9 to announce the winners. Joy of the Pen is sponsored by the Friends of the Topsham Public Library.
