Herbert W. Pike, a jeweler of Lisbon Falls, on Tuesday evening became entangled in a rope trailing from the rear of an auto-truck and was dragged along Middle street, Lewiston, for nearly fifty feet, receiving a scalp in addition to tearing his garments. He was attended at the Central Maine General Hospital. He was able to go to his home. The truck is a thirty-horsepower 1912 Stewart, the property of the Haskell Seed & Implement Company of this city. The rope that was being dragged after the machine was not noticed by Pike, who in crossing stepped into it.

Army draftees in Androscoggin County will probably be coming from a lower age bracket in the future, Joseph Curran, chairman of the Androscoggin County Selective Service Board, said last night following President Kennedy’s executive directive Tuesday which stopped the drafting of childless married men. Curran said the directive “cut us right down to where we don’t have enough for the quotas.” He said it is very likely that men younger than the previous average of 23 years will be called up for service. Curran noted that the draft dropped down to the 19-year-old bracket a few years ago. He estimated that the new order would lower the average draft age only one year, to 22 years old. Only single men will be called for examinations now. Curran reported, since it would be useless to give physical examinations to married men if they are now exempt.
