1931 – 2013

HALLOWELL — Barbara L. Colwill, 82, formerly of Augusta, died Sunday, Sept. 15, at Hillside Terrace.

She was born in Oakland on June 3, 1931, the daughter of Martin and Vera (Tillson) Freeman. Barbara graduated from Cony High School, Class of 1950, and married Raymond Colwill Jr., in 1953.

She started a daycare center in her home in the Mayfair section of Augusta, which she operated for more than 25 years. She later worked as a cashier at Bernard’s Foodland for many years, until her retirement.

Barbara loved knitting, crocheting, bird-watching and flower gardening. Family meant everything to her and she always put them first. She was a wonderful, caring and loving mother and grandmother who will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Debra Bisson and her husband, Robert, of Lewiston, Dean Colwill and his wife, Sher, of Mesa, Ariz., Dana Colwill and his wife, Suzanne, of Farmingdale and Diane Cloutier and her husband, Joseph, of Augusta; 13 grandchildren, Jeremy Allen, Erica Bisson, Kim Thistlewaite, Robert Bisson III, Chris Bisson, Marcy Searles, Derek Colwill, Brandon Colwill, Dean Colwill Jr., Dylan Colwill, Corey Colwill, Nathan Cloutier and Benjamin Cloutier; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Colwill Jr., in 1990; a sister, Beverly Smith; and two brothers, George Leavitt and Jack Leavitt.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Hillside Terrace for the care they provided over the last 10 weeks and also to Androscoggin Hospice for their care and support over the past week.
