PERU — The Worthley Pond Association has awarded the 2013 Worthley Pond Association Scholarship to Kaitlin Morris, daughter of association member Noreen Morris and granddaughter of members Joe Morris and the late Claudia Morris.
Kaitlin is a third-year student at the State University of New York at Oneonta majoring in early childhood/childhood education (B-6) and has earned a B average in her studies. Her thoughts on Worthley Pond are as follows:
“Sunrises, beautiful mountains across a shimmering lake, the sounds of loons echoing off in the distance. These are just some of the few images that I hold from my favorite summer vacation spot, Maine. Although the sights and sounds of this dreamlike place are truly amazing, that was never close to the best part of it. It was the people I grew up with every summer and those I have met over the years who have had a significant impact on my life.
“The state of Maine is known for its stunning landscape. From its star-filled skies to its full green forests, people call Maine a great place to go on vacation. I, on the other hand, consider Maine my second home. As far back as I can remember, I have spent every summer at my grandparents’ quaint camp house in Peru, Maine. Throughout the years, the scenery has always stood out to me. From listening to the wind blow through the thousands of trees off in the distance to watching the loons gracefully dive into the lake right behind my house, this place has always created a sense of peace in me.
“Living in this visually striking state each summer has really taught me to appreciate the true beauty in nature and the simplicity of life. I have learned not to take such beautiful things for granted and I am aware that it is partly my responsibility to protect these things I love.”
