LISBON — A little stumble out of the gate sent Lisbon to the back burner of Western Class D buzz. Given what happened on both ends of Route 9 Saturday, the Greyhounds will find themselves a hot topic once again.

Quincy Thompson tallied three touchdowns and 322 yards of total offense running, receiving and passing, Jordon Torres topped the 200-mark himself, and Kyle Bourget threw for two touchdowns in the Greyhounds’ 42-6 win over Old Orchard Beach at Thompson Field.

Lisbon stacked up 509 total yards like cord wood in just about every way they could. An Old Orchard Beach defense that was allowing 11 points per game didn’t give it up willingly.

“They did a great job of stopping our run at first and our passing game opened up the run in the second half,” said Thompson, who completed his only toss of the game 42 yards to Torres, then caught four of Bourget’s for 117 yards and an eye-popping touchdown. “They had a good defense. They shut down the outside really well.”

Lisbon’s defense, which has been just as stingy as the Seagulls’, begrudgingly surrendered 78 yards with the starters in a little over three quarters and picked off three passes.

Big plays were more frequent when Lisbon (3-1) had the ball. The best may have come on their third snap of the game, when Thompson caught a Bourget pass in the right flat at around the 35, bounced off an immediate and forceful hit from behind, then sprinted down the sideline 78 yards for all the points Lisbon would need.

“I thought I was wide open and a guy came out of nowhere (to hit him),” Thompson said. “I shook off another tackle and just turned the speed on.”

Although the Seagulls shut down the outside lanes early, Thompson was able to glide three yards to the end zone around left end on fourth and a long one, and Torres’ second two-point conversion made it 16-0.

Bourget (7-for-14, 172 yards) and Thompson made it 22-0 with a 9-yard touchdown toss to inflate the lead to 22-0 at the half. 

Following fullback Joe Philbrick  and a patchwork offensive line, Thompson (16 carries, 163 yards, two TDs) and Torres (14 carries, 148 yards, TD) gashed the Seahawks (2-2) in the second half. Thompson galloped out of a tackle near midfield on his 56-yard TD jaunt.  Torres easily found the corner on his 42-yard TD run late in the third and that was pretty much it for the starters.

“Joe’s a great blocker. That’s 220 pounds out there in front of you,” Thompson said. “Our line did great today, too.”

“We’re still a work in progress with our line,” said Lisbon coach Dick Mynahan, who’s had to stitch together a unit that’s had holes punched in it by injuries and academic ineligibility. “We’ve still got a wide receiver at tackle. We’ve got a freshman at guard. We’ve got kids coming back now, so we’re going to have a different line next (Friday night at Traip).”

The Greyhounds have won three in a row since falling to Winthrop/Monmouth, 14-8, in the opener.

OOB quarterback Bryan Roberts took numerous shots downfield, but the Greyhounds usually had an answer.

“I would have to say it was our rush,” Philbrick said, noting the green light he and senior linebacker Jordan Glover had to go after junior quarterback Bryan Roberts. “And our DB’s were picking off passes.”

Understandably, Philbrick forgot that it was lineman Jacob Johnston who had one of the picks. Corners Henry Adams and Kurtis Bolton had the others.

“We studied them pretty well on film and we worked on our DBs all week,” Mynahan said. “It’s kind of a fun week when you can play 7-on-7 in practice. The kids are relatively young back there. We had two starters out for the first time today. First time all year they started and all underclassmen. They did a nice job.”

OOB avoided the shutout on Joe Gildard’s 31-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter.
