GRAY — Police have released the name of an Oxford County man who they say committed suicide Saturday afternoon at Gray-New Gloucester High School during homecoming weekend.

Gaige McGue, 19, of Denmark died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a high school parking lot while at least two of the school’s sports teams competed nearby, according to a Monday announcement by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

McGue never attended Gray-New Gloucester High School, according to the sheriff’s office, which described the incident, which occurred at approximately 12:50 p.m., as a “tragedy.”

School officials canceled all school-related activities, including Saturday night’s homecoming dance, after the incident. Maine School Administrative District 15 has canceled or postponed athletic contests scheduled for Monday as well, with varsity and junior varsity high school boys’ and girls’ soccer games against Poland Regional High School delayed until Tuesday.

Middle school cross country and junior varsity high school football contests will not be rescheduled.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Monday its investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Capt. Shawn O’Leary from the sheriff’s office told Portland CBS television affiliate WGME 13 the victim had been in a relationship with one of the high school athletes competing at the location Saturday.

Portland NBC television affiliate WCSH 6 reported Saturday that school officials stressed the suicide did not happen in plain sight of crowds on hand for homecoming festivities, including children who were at the high school property getting their faces painted and playing in bouncy houses.
