PORTLAND — Attorneys have started filing motions to delay federal court cases in Maine because of the federal government shutdown.
The Portland Press Herald reports the U.S. attorney’s office has filed motions to delay at least two pending civil matters. One involves a Princeton resident who slipped on snow and fell outside the Indian Township Health Center. The other involves enforcing a $78 million judgment against the owners of a Dixfield housing development.
Attorneys for a woman suing Kohl’s Department Store in Westbrook also have asked for a delay, because they work for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and have been furloughed.
The clerk of the federal court in Maine said starting next week, the court will have to cut back operations if the shutdown continues.
