Damaging winds and heavy rains passed through the region Monday night due to a fast moving cold front.

According to Eric Sinsabaugh of the National Weather Service in Gray, the front was traveling at about 40 to 50 knots through the region and the service has heard of many downed trees and power lines.

The severe thunderstorm warnings, which stretched from Sanford to Skowhegan on Tuesday night, kept power crews and emergency personnel busy clearing debris.

As of 8:30 p.m., Central Maine Power was reporting 6,427 customers without service. The heaviest outages were in Franklin (1,573), Cumberland (1,390), Oxford (949), and Sagadahoc (908) counties.

Sinsabaugh said one positive note is that there appears to be no lightning associated with the storm, which should depart the Downeast region late Monday night.
