NORTH YARMOUTH — The lawyer for a man police say shot and killed another man during a confrontation at a beekeeping business in North Yarmouth says his client acted in self-defense.
Police allege 70-year-old Merrill Kimball shot 63-year-old Leon Kelley multiple times Sunday at Brown’s Bee Farm, which is co-owned by Kelley’s father-in law. Kimball is married to the bee farm’s other co-owner.
Kimball has not been charged.
Daniel Lilley, Kimball’s attorney, told the Portland Press Herald the shooting was a “clear case of self-defense.” Kimball was legally allowed to carry a weapon.
Lilley said Kimball and his wife were hurt in an altercation with Kelley that preceded the shooting. He did not say what the confrontation was about.
Police said they are still investigating whether a crime was committed.
