AUGUSTA (AP) — Efforts to open a Dunkin’ Donuts shop in a residential neighborhood of Augusta have apparently died.
The proposal found no supporters on the City Council on Thursday night.
The planning board had previously rejected the developer’s proposal to rezone a residential lot on Davenport Street for business.
The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/GOW143 ) reported that a majority of the roughly 30 members of the public in attendance clapped and thanked the councilors for not sponsoring the proposal.
Neighborhood residents said they feared an increase in traffic the coffee shop would bring. The developer argued that rezoning the site would not encroach on the neighborhood.
There are already five Dunkin’ Donuts shops in Augusta.
