It was a model opening, a model display of garments and living models displayed them to perfection at the fall opening of E. S. Paul & Company, Lisbon street, Lewiston, Wednesday afternoon and evening. Over 600 people gathered in the suit department which had been cleared of all the racks and hangers, from 2 until 6 in the afternoon and from 7.30 until 9.30 in the evening. Not even standing room was left, and the demonstration which was entirely by local young women, was such that brought only the highest of compliments from the audience. Pettengill’s orchestra furnished music and chairs wore placed about the room for the convenience of the visitors. A wide carpet from the fitting room to the front of the store furnished an ideal place for the display and here, evening gowns and wraps, suits, afternoon gowns, street dresses and other garments were shown to excellent advantage, the models taking their parts to perfection. The models, after leaving the dressing rooms, displayed the gowns by walking among the visitors.

A Halloween-masked bandit brandishing a pistol terrorized tellers at the Sabattus Street branch of the First Manufacturers National Bank at 2 o’clock this afternoon and fled the bank after scooping up “all the loose cash.” It was reported to be $10,000, by police sources. The single bandit, according to Robert Frechette, Horton St., Lewiston, a Railway Express truck driver, parked his aging Pontiac in a radical manner in front of the bank door, “hopped out and ran into the bank.” According to Frechette, the man, who was wearing either a Halloween mask or paint on his face, entered the bank and immediately went behind the tellers’ counter. “I came up onto the steps,” Frechette said, “and he was behind the counter with a gun in his hand. I went back outside and got the license number of his car as he took off.”

A committee planning the renovation of Lewiston City Hall will meet with the architectural firm next week for completion of a master plan. The firm will survey city departments to determine space needs. Lewiston City Hall, built in 1890, is on the National Registry of Historic Places. The building’s first floor has been vacant since the Lewiston Police Department moved to a new office in November of 1986.
