LHS vying for safe-driving grant

LEWISTON —As part of National Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct. 18-26, Lewiston High School has registered for “CelebrateMyDrive.” Community members are asked to make safe driving commitments. The 100 schools receiving the most safe driving commitments at the end of the designated week will win a grant.

To make a safe driving commitment, individuals 14 years or older may register at www.celebratemydrive.com (follow the prompts), and then beginning Oct. 18, one vote per valid email address per day may be cast through Oct. 26.

Two schools will receive a grand prize $100,000 grant and a concert by Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson. Ninety percent of the funds would go to the ongoing local Franklin Pasture Sports Complex fundraising campaign, with 10 percent allocated to teen driver safety. Eight schools will receive $100,000, and 90 schools will get $25,000. Approximately 3,000 schools have registered throughout the U.S.

Dinner is benefit for Paul Pelletier

AUBURN — A spaghetti dinner benefit for Paul Pelletier will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at American Legion Post 31, 426 Washington Ave.

Live music will be played by Southern Tribe, aka Fulldrive, from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a 50/50 and raffles drawn during the evening.

Donation is $10 at the door. All proceeds will go towards Pelletier’s medical bills.

Woodlawn Cem. annual supper

BOWDOIN — The Woodlawn Cemetery Association will hold its annual supper from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at West Bowdoin Parish Hall, 54 West Road.

The menu is smothered beef or roast turkey.

Cost is $8 for adults, $3.50 for children 12 and under, and free for preschoolers.

VFW Post 9150 meet Oct. 21

LEWISTON — The Longley-Dionne VFW Post 9150 will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the Lewiston Armory.

The agenda includes Veterans Day activities.

All officers and members are encouraged to attend.

‘Flatlander’ author to visit library

AUBURN — A flatlander, by definition, is anyone not originally from Maine. At times, flatlanders seem to be a little confused and occasionally disturbed by our Maine ways. However, author Mark Scott Ricketts will be at the Auburn Public Library as part of the Fall Book Festival at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, to clarify our Maine ways as he shares from his book, “A Flatlander’s Guide to Maine.”

The book is filled with humorous drawings, silly cartoons, and made-up stories to make you laugh. Meet the author and share some laughs at the expense of flatlanders.

Registry of Deeds for research

HEBRON — Larry Glatz will speak on genealogical research from the Registry of Deeds on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

This will follow a short Historical Society meeting at 7 p.m. at the Hebron Town office. Public is invited.

NARFE meeting is Oct. 22

LEWISTON — The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Chapter 1804 will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Ramada Inn.

A social hour will be followed by lunch at noon.

A federal Blue Cross/Blue Shield representative will speak to the group and answer questions about the 2014 Blue Cross/Blue Shield coverage.

Attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items for donations to those in need.

Pickwick Club to host Nayder

AUBURN — The Pickwick Club, Maine’s Dickens reading group, will feature Bates’ English Dept. Chairman Lillian Nayder, speaking on her book “The Other Dickens.” Q and A to follow.

Affordable Care info at library

TOPSHAM — A discussion titled, “The Affordable Care Act 101: Understanding the New Health Care Law,” led by Jacob Grindle, Health Marketplace Navigator, program specialist of Western Maine Community Action, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Topsham Public Library, 25 Foreside Road.

This event will walk attendees through the basics of the law and the newly available resources every Mainer should know about. Explore what the coming changes will mean for individuals, families and organizations.

Halloween dance for Project Grad

GRAY — A Halloween dance for Gray-New Gloucester High School Project Graduation will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Oct. 26, at Spring Meadows Country Club.

The dance is adults only with cash bar. Music by DJ Scott Doyle with costume contest and 50/50 raffle.

Mt. Ararat project graduation

TOPSHAM — A fundraiser yard/craft sale for the Mt. Ararat Class of 2014 Project Graduation will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Mt. Ararat High School, 73 Eagles Way.

The commons area of the school will be filled with tables of people selling gently used items, crafts, homemade goodies, etc. In addition, there will be breakfast items available to buy and a chili/chowder lunch.
