Just when I thought Greenpeace had already hit its all-time low, Peter Willcox and his entourage surpassed that. (Bangor Daily News story, printed by Sun Journal, Sept. 27.)

Why did they think they could attempt to board the platform of a Russian oil rig and not have some consequences?

The Russians reacted to the breach with restraint and, according to their rules and government protocols. U.S. authorities would probably have done the same thing.

Maggie Willcox needs to stop whining about what she seems to perceive as unfair treatment by Russian authorities. When you are in another country, you have to abide by their rules, including staying out of unauthorized areas.

Mr. Willcox and his supportive wife should be thankful things didn’t get worse. My guess is that the Russians will send him and his fellow Greenpeace members on their way back to the U.S. after a mere “slap on the wrist” — a very kind gesture on the part of Russian officials.

I am sure the incident will not deter Mr. Willcox or the Greenpeace movement, whatever that represents. Perhaps next time they can propel themselves into more challenging arenas, such as the coast of Somalia or North Korea. The outcome might not be as forgiving.
