In response to letters about the Farmington Fair from Charles Bennett (Sept. 28) and David Theriault (Oct. 4), I have reasons why I see a good fair going backward and very likely will not be around in years to come without some very important changes. I am very concerned.

I am 72 years old and come from a family that was very active in the fair. I have attended the Franklin County Agricultural Fair all my life and remember when the fair was going for three days — Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

I remember when there were at least six cattle sheds; they were all full with dairy and beef cattle every day of the fair. Now, the farms that bring their cattle are there for only one or two days.

Also, there were sheds filled with horses and oxen for pulling. The 4-H had a building showing their animals, and there was a building for a lot of sheep and pigs with piglets. Those sheds were full all week and not just on show day.

I also remember when there were great shows brought in from down south with great entertainment. Now, people have to go to the Oxford County Fair, such as this year to see and hear Kenny Rogers.

The Franklin County fair board needs to take a long, hard look and listen to the public so that more people will come to the fair and enjoy it, much as I have done in the past.
