An explosive two-alarm fire heavily damaged the Rock Maple Wood Heel Co. Inc. second-floor shop on West Bates Street, Lewiston, late yesterday afternoon and caused water damage to Crest Shoe Co. quarters on the first floor. Overall damage was estimated at “several thousand dollars” by Fire Chief Roland G. Dumais. It was undetermined if certain sections of the plants would be cleaned up enough to resume operations this morning. An employee of the Frank S. Jordan Sheet Metal Co., suffered facial burns when the fire erupted as he was cleaning a blower pipe for Rock Maple Wood Heel Co. He was treated at Central Maine General Hospital. “I had a light bulb in the pipe to see what I was doing,” he said, “and the heat from the bulb ignited lacquer and paint sprays inside the duct” and the fire started to shoot out of the pipe. Two shoe company employees attempted to put out the flames with an extinguisher. The fire spread, setting off the sprinkler system.

Auburn recreational softball teams will be playing games under the lights next season. Norris Ingersoll, superintendent of the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department, said bids for a lighting system at Upper Pettengill are being sought. The bids call for the installation of four poles and the lighting system. The entire project for the Pettengill complex calls for the erection of an outfield fence and the construction of a concession stand, a building which will include sanitary facilities.
