High school student rushed to hospital after being struck by car in Newport

NEWPORT — A Nokomis High School student is listed in fair condition after being struck by a car in front of the school early Friday morning.

The 16-year-old girl had parked her vehicle in the junior parking lot located across the street from the high school, said Newport police Lt. Randy Wing. She was crossing Williams Road from the junior parking lot at approximately 6:19 a.m. when she was struck by a southbound 2001 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Miranda Robinson, 32, of St. Albans, said Wing.

The student, who was not named because of her age, suffered a broken pelvis, said Wing. Internal injuries are also a concern, he said.

She was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield before being transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. An EMMC official said on Friday afternoon that she was listed in fair condition.

Speed and alcohol are not considered factors, said Wing. It was still dark at the time of the crash and there are no illuminating lights in that area, he added.

“It’s a 45 mph zone, and that’s probably close to the speed of impact,” he said. “At this time, the crash is still under investigation. Whether or not charges are filed will be determined at a later date.”

Maine State Police performed accident reconstruction on Friday, but the report won’t be ready for several weeks, said Wing.
