LEWISTON — The city clerk’s office is seeking residents to work as election clerks at polling stations Tuesday, Nov. 5, and at future city elections.
Election clerks must be registered voters and enrolled in either the Democratic or Republican party, or willing to enroll in one of these parties. Training material is provided.
Two shifts are available: 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to closing, which is usually around 8:30 p.m. Workers are paid $50 per shift.
According to a news release from the city, election clerks are responsible for checking in voters on the incoming voting list, distributing ballots and monitoring the voting machines, among other duties.
By state law, election clerks who work as election officials at the polling places must be enrolled as a Democrat or Republican, and an equal number of representatives of each party are required to work at the polls.
According to City Clerk Kathy Montejo, several of the people who regularly serve as election clerks are unavailable to work this year and “we need to hire about 10 additional citizen election clerks.”
Interested residents are asked to contact the clerk’s office at 513-3124. Election worker application forms are also available on the city’s website at www.lewistonmaine.gov
