WILTON — The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved sending letters to the Maine Department of Transportation requesting a speed limit study and low-cost improvements to the intersection of Routes 2 and 4 and Route 156.

Following topics brought up at the MDOT public hearing on the intersection last week, Town Manager Rhonda Irish brought the prepared letters before selectmen Tuesday.

Project managers and engineers from MDOT held a public hearing Thursday at Academy Hill School to get comments on four potential solutions for the intersection, the site of numerous accidents.

Heading west on Routes 2 and 4, the speed limit before the Big Apple is 50 mph and drops to 40 mph about 1,000 feet before the intersection, she told the board. 

There’s a curve between the intersection and Big Apple and no signage, so the intersection is not visible from that approach. Coming down the hill, heading east, the intersection is more clearly visible, she said.

Irish mentioned other intersections along Routes 2 and 4 where speeds drop to 30 or 35 mph.

Residents brought up several low-cost improvements that would benefit drivers if they were done now. They included rumble strips before the intersection, signs and modern lights, she said.

Paul MacDonald, project manager, indicated the town needed to put its requests in writing to the department.
