1933 – 2013

AUBURN — Bernard W. Martel, 80, a lifelong resident of Auburn, died Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Hospice House in Auburn. He was the husband of Lucie (Roy) Martel.

Bernard was born in Auburn on June 16, 1933, a son of the late Joseph P. and Leonie (Geness) Martel. He attended area schools and grew up working on the family farm.

He married his wife, Lucie, on Aug. 13, 1960, and went on to raise five children. He worked as a machinist for the former Sewell & Sons in Brunswick and Eastland Shoe in Freeport. After retiring at age 65, he went back to work part time.

He was an active member of the American Legion in Auburn and a faithful communicant of St. Louis Church in Auburn, prior to its closing earlier this year. Bernard loved to tinker, and enjoyed making and fixing just about anything in his garage, or designing different, useful gadgets. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends.

Besides his wife, Lucie, he is survived by his five children, Chet Martel of Livermore, Doris Green and her husband, Troy, of Turner, Elaine Martel of Auburn, Fern Lake and her husband, William, also of Auburn and Gene Quimby and her husband, Richard, of Turner. He also leaves 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; as well as a brother, Gerard Martel of Lisbon; two sisters, Pauline Labonte and Rolande Dube, both of Auburn; and several nieces and nephews.
