LEWISTON — The Franco-American Heritage Center has announced the dates for its next sessions of French Reacquisition classes for adults and Fun in French classes for children.

French Reacquisition classes are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning Monday, Nov. 11, and running for six consecutive weeks. Monday nights are for complete beginners, or those adults with virtually no French-speaking abilities, with class taught in English.

Tuesday night classes are for what the Franco Center calls “false beginners,” which are those with some familiarity with the language, perhaps gained from speaking it in their youth, and taught mostly in English but with a fair amount of French included to help re-acclimate students to it.

Both levels will be taught by Diane Pelletier-Perron, a Lewiston native who spent 18 years living in France and who as a result has a deep knowledge of the differences between Parisian and North American varieties of French.

Fun in French classes will be held on Saturday mornings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and are intended for children between the ages of 4 and 10. Each child or sibling pair must be accompanied by a parent, grandparent or other adult caregiver. Because the class is held on the weekend, Fun in French will run only five weeks because of a one-week break for the long Thanksgiving Day weekend.

The purpose of Fun in French is not necessarily to make fluent French speakers out of children but rather to introduce them to their Franco heritage, to teach basic French expressions and to pass on the traditions their Franco ancestors brought with them as they settled in the area.

The course will be taught by Jacynthe Jacques, a native of Quebec who has lived in the Lewiston area for the last 17 years. Jacques also teaches after-school French classes at Sherwood Heights Elementary School as part of the Maine French Heritage Language Program, administered locally by the Franco Center.

The French Reacquisition classes cost $75. Fun in French classes cost $50 for five weeks, and additional siblings may be added for $35. Classes for both adults and kids require a minimum of six students per session, with refunds issued to those who have pre-paid if that threshold is not met.

More information about these classes can be found on the Franco Center’s new website at FrancoCenter.org in the “Education and Heritage” section.
