OXFORD — Charges have been dismissed against an Oxford man accused of assaulting a woman near Allen Hill Road in June.

In an order filed Oct. 17 in Oxford County Superior Court, Assistant District Attorney Joseph O’Connor dismissed the case against James Grovo, citing insufficient evidence because the victim recanted her statement.

Grovo was arrested in early June on aggravated assault charges, but was never indicted by a grand jury.

The woman filed a protection from abuse order against Grovo on June 6 and a motion to terminate the order July 9. Amendments to the order that allowed contact between Grovo and the woman were granted by a judge three days later.

In her motion, the woman claimed police officers and others forced her to make the statement that led to the protection order.

On Thursday, Lt. Michael Ward of the Oxford Police Department, who investigated the case, denied the woman was pressured into making any statements during his interview with her.
