1928 – 2013

RANGELEY — Anthony “Tony” Jannace Jr., 85, died unexpectedly in his home on Saturday, Nov. 16.

He was born in Rumford on July 7, 1928, the son of Antonio Jannace Sr. and Bertha (Coulombe) Jannace. He married Nancy LeClair on April 16, 1963.

Anthony and Nancy moved to Rangeley with their family in 1980 to open Rangeley Foodland and later on Jannace’s Clothing Store, which blossomed into Nancy’s Gifts. In 2004, he started Backwood’s with his son. He retired as active management of the business in 2005.

Anthony was a member of the St. Luke’s Catholic Church and spearheaded many fundraisers and church events. He was also actively involved in town politics.

An avid outdoorsman in his younger years, Anthony became a friend to all the local wildlife as he was found feeding them nightly. He also enjoyed sitting on his front porch admiring the view of the lake, spending time with his grandchildren, reminiscing old times with family, friends and enjoying the longtime companionship with Kathy Morin.

Surviving are his son, James Jannace and wife, Deanna, of Rangeley; daughter, Cathy Cushing and husband, Sam, of Scarborough; brother, John Jannace and wife, Beverley, of Cumberland; four grandchildren, Christopher Fitzgerald, Sean Fitzgerald, Daren Jannace and Olivia Jannace; and a niece, Teri.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Nancy Jannace; and a niece, Anne.
