RUMFORD — As temperatures plummet and roads become icy, it is difficult and sometimes dangerous to exercise outdoors. For that reason, Mountain Valley High School is opening its doors to senior citizens who would like to get some exercise by walking the halls during the school day. The building is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Principal Matt Gilbert said, “I encourage active seniors to take advantage of the opportunity to stay active and connect with some outstanding young people. For safety’s sake, please use the front entrance by the office. Sign in when you enter the building and sign out when you leave. We look forward to seeing you.”
One active senior is already taking advantage of the invitation. In addition to being a huge Red Sox fan, Roger Pepin is also a fan of exercise. He has been walking the halls of MVHS for nearly 50 years.
He taught biology and drivers’ education at Rumford High School for 26 years. When he retired in 1991, he continued exercising regularly at the same building, now known as MVHS.
He recalled, “When I first started walking in the building, there were a handful of other seniors. Now, I don’t see anyone walking.”
Pepin added, “I’ve never had to worry about falling, a real danger to some seniors. Because of my muscle tone, if I get off-balance, I can correct myself and not fall. That keeps me out of the nursing home.”
In addition to walking the halls, he also uses the equipment in the Roger Pepin Fitness Room.
“Using weights also helps with muscle tone,” Pepin explained.
In terms of motivation, Pepin admits, “There’s some times I don’t want to do the exercise, but I still do it.”
Seniors are encouraged to create a walking group to provide motivation.
