LEWISTON — The city has scheduled a recount of the Ward 5 vote for the School Committee.
In a public notice, City Clerk Kathy Montejo said the recount is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in the Lewiston City Council Chamber at the request of candidate Jama Mohamed.
The seat has been held by Sonia Taylor, who is not seeking re-election.
Mohamed, a write-in candidate, was the sole candidate for the Ward 5 School Committee race. According to the City Charter, Mohamed needed to get at least 50 votes to win the seat. That’s the number of signatures candidates need to collect to win a regular spot on the ballot.
In the Nov. 5 voting, Mohamed collected 49 votes.
If the recount shows Mohamed is still short of votes, the matter goes to Mayor Robert Macdonald and the City Council. According to the charter, Macdonald will nominate a candidate to fill the seat and city councilors will vote to ratify his choice.
