As serene as ever the good old Spanish-Russian swindle has bobbed in once more. This time the man selected as a prospective victim by the operators is George H. Potter of Main street, Lewiston. It is the same old yarn, told in the same old way and written on the same kind of cross-ruled paper which those who use this method of separating unsophisticated folks possessed of a desire to improve their financial condition from their good cash seem to favor. Along with it comes what purports to be a clipping from an English paper which hints to the impoverished daughter. It has changed but little in the many years since the first copy of the letter was sent out from the headquarters of the gang; it will probably change little in the next score or so years.

Lewiston police this morning recovered a carload of items taken as part of a scavenger hunt and arrested two 16-year-olds charged with the thefts. A street sign, hubcaps, football jacket, church sign, two out-of-state license plates, light bulb and golf ball were found in the vehicle. The juveniles also turned over to police a copied list of items they were supposed to find. One rule on the list: “No buying anything.” Lt. Ronald Lessard said, “We want to discourage something like this as quickly as possible. Fun is one thing, but they’re involved in criminal activity and we’re not going to condone stuff like that.” Police believe as many as 20 high-school-aged people were involved in the scavenger hunt.
