100 years ago, 1913
Space between the shutter and window frame at a cafe, lower Lisbon street, proved to be the undoing of its proprietor and his clerk, who were convicted of liquor charges in the Lewiston court Friday morning on the testimony of Deputy Lynn, who perched on a ladder, saw four drinks of cider sold. The shutter was brought in with the respondents and Deputy Lyons guarding it for the court to observe the cracks that the defense maintained were not large enough to see thru. The deputy swore that the clerk sold four drinks out of a coffee kettle that was filled with cider. After which, the deputies went in, making the seizure of a 30 gallon keg of cider and the arrest of the men.

50 years ago, 1963
Expressions of shock and grief and spontaneous church and synagog memorial services came early last night as the full impact of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy began to be felt by Lewiston and Auburn citizenry. Most of the events scheduled for this weekend in the Twin City area were either postponed or canceled. Both mayors also directed that schools be closed on the day of the president’s funeral. Also in Lewiston, where the municipal election is set for next Monday, the day of the funeral, Mayor Donia Girard asked candidates to refrain from campaigning. Some 850 students and faculty members of Bates College jammed the Bates chapel last night for a memorial service. It was simple and effective, with all of the chapel except for the altar in darkness.

25 years ago, 1988
A number of area residents are working this week on arrangements for the Maine Junior Miss Pageant during which the 1989 title holder will be selected. The week-long series of activities climaxes on Saturday evening with the crowning of Maine’s Junior Miss at Montello School Auditorium, Lewiston.
