We are looking for past participants, cancer survivors, committee members and staff to join the celebration.

We are also looking for any and all pictures from the past Relay for Lifes in Androscoggin County for the memory wall.

Please contact me if you are a past participant or have some pictures to share. Also, if anyone would like more information about the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, please call me at 777-3843. Thank you. — Debby Mansur, co-chairwoman

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’d like to thank everyone who responded to my Oct. 2 request for cancer bracelets. Sorry I couldn’t use them all. I chose the one that had two sizes. I was real pleased with them and want to thank Elaine for mailing them to me. Thanks to all. — Peg, Mexico

DEAR SUN SPOTS: This is a second request looking for candlepin bowlers for our Wednesday morning coffee league. We bowl at Good Times Lanes on Route 196 in Lisbon Falls.

We are women ranging from 40 to 90 years young, and we bowl for fun from 9 to 11 a.m. every Wednesday.

It’s a great way to meet and make new friends while enjoying a fun-filled, stress-free morning.

Please consider joining us. We have openings for permanent or substitute bowlers.

For more information please call me at 786-3052 or Sharon at 353-4839 and leave a message. We look forward to hearing from you. — Rachel Cyr, Lewiston

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for recommending the Franco-American Collection at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College as a resource for Charles Bouchles (Nov. 18), who was looking for help learning the Canadian dialect of French. There’s been a lot of interest in recent years in valuing the local form of French in addition to the “standard” European variety you’ll find in most textbooks.

I would indeed suggest that our sing-along sessions are a fun way to learn to roll those r’s and get your tongue around another language. We provide all the words, so you don’t need to worry about knowing the language perfectly. The next session, a special Christmas edition will be held on Dec. 20, in the chapel of the d’Youville Pavilion at St. Mary’s. There will be a notice in the Sun Journal with more details closer to the date.

I also have two excellent recommendations for Mr. Bouchles if he doesn’t mind learning as part of a group. My friends at the Franco Center in Lewiston offer adult French language reacquisition classes, which are designed for folks who may have known French as a child but have now forgotten. They offer two levels — a beginner and intermediate-advanced.

The latest six-week block was scheduled to start last week, but he could check to see if they’re still taking applicants. Otherwise, they do offer these regularly. The website is www.francocenter.org/education-heritage/classes-and-events/french-reacquisition-class-for-adults/

For those over 50, USM LAC also hosts Senior College, an organization which offers classes for lifelong learning. Their offerings usually include a French conversation class, taught, I believe, with Canadian French in mind. Many of the folks there are Franco-Americans who want to reconnect with their language. Their spring 2014 catalog isn’t quite out yet, but their website is www.usm.maine.edu/seniorcollege

If you call, they may be able to tell you if French classes will be on the schedule next semester.

Hopefully those links will be useful to Mr. Bouchles and your readers. — James Myall, [email protected]
