PORTLAND (AP) — The Portland Planning Board has approved plans to redevelop the historic Nathan Clifford Elementary School building into market-rate housing.
No one at Tuesday night’s public hearing spoke against or in support of the reuse effort.
The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/18GCTjv) reported that Developers Collaborative of Portland plans to build 22 units in the three-story building on Falmouth Street that dates to 1909.
Kevin Bunker of Developers Collaborative told the Planning Board he has secured financing for the project and plans to break ground in February.
The school closed two years ago. The city sold the building for $1 last month.
The building was designed by renowned architect John Calvin Stevens and is named after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Nathan Clifford, whose grandson was mayor of Portland at the time.
