SACO — St. Dom’s took advantage of their opportunities and it paid off as the Saints ame from behind to earn 5-4 overtime victory against Scarborough in varsity boys’ hockey at MHG Ice Arena in Saco.

“Our players have responded well in our games,” St. Dom’s coach Steve Ouellette said. “It’s really just a maturity process for our players. They now have a year or so under their belt in varsity. They’re staying so much more positive when they’re down the scoreboard.”

Brad Berube finished the game with three goals, capping off the hat trick with the game-winner at the 3:37 mark of the overtime session.

Berube parked in front of the net, tipped Chris Laverdiere’s blast from the point, beating Scarborough’s goaltender Ben Bragg.

“His feet are always moving and he’s putting himself in the right spot. That’s really nice to see,” Ouellette said.

St. Dom’s opened the scoring just 2:28 into the game as Mike Richard broke in alone on a breakaway, sliding the puck past Bragg for a 1-0 lead.

With Mitch Lorenz in the box for St. Dom’s, Chase Hainey was given a five minor major for boarding after a hard check on Scarborough’s Ian Morris, giving the Red Storm an extended five-on-three.

Scarborough capitalized with 10 seconds left on Lorenz penalty as Cam Loiselle fired a shot from the left point, beating Caleb Dostie to even the game, 1-1.

At 9:58 of the second period, Jake Gross made a nifty inside move on the Saints’ defender, snapping a shot by Dostie as Scarborough took its first lead of the game, 2-1.

Colin Hayward was whistled late in the second period for high-sticking, giving the Saints a carryover into the third where they’d even the game only 17 seconds in, as Berbue notched his first goal of the game.

Less than two minutes later, Gross added his second of the game as the Red Storm regained the lead in the back-and-forth contest.

Berube pulled the Saints even, pouncing on the rebound from the left hashmark as Bragg was unable to get back into position.

At 10:21, Caleb Labrie took advantage of an odd series of events as the Saints took a 4-3 lead.

The Red Storm believed they scored a goal, but the whistle never blew despite players from both teams stopping on the play. The puck was dumped down at the opposite end of the ice where Bragg went out of his net to clear it, leaving the net open as the puck found its way to the stick of Labrie.

With 2:33 left in the game, Loiselle added his second goal of the game for Scarborough, sending the contest into overtime.

“We talked about it before going on the ice that the team that made the less mistakes was probably going to win this game,” said Ouellette. “That’s what it really came down to. They’re one of the top teams in the state. It’s a big win for us.”

Bragg finished 16 saves, while Dostie stopped 20 of 24 shots for the win.
