1913 – 2013

AUBURN — Mazie Stefin Schwartz, a longtime resident of Clover Manor in Auburn, died on Saturday, Dec. 7.

She was born in Lynn, Mass., on Sept. 11, 1913, the firstborn child of Israel and Pauline Cogan Stefin. She graduated from Lynn English High School. She married Maynard Schwartz on Jan. 1, 1936. They were married for 50 years. They lived most of their married life in Auburn, where they raised their beloved daughter, Helene.

There was a period of 10 years when she and her husband lived in Brockton, Mass. During that time, Mazie earned an early education teaching certificate from the University of Massachusetts. She then worked as a preschool and as a kindergarten teacher. When she moved back to Maine, she was a substitute teacher and tutor for the Lewiston School Department.

Mazie served as president of the Beth Abraham Sisterhood and Hadassah. She was certified to transcribe braille after having studied in Lewiston. She loved to dance, knit and entertain her friends and family. She enjoyed golf and card games. She was the chairperson of the Havurah at Temple Shalom. Mazie instituted the line dancing program at the Temple. She was appointed to the National Veterans’ Board. Mazie thoroughly enjoyed her life and volunteered for many organizations. In her later years she volunteered at the Longley School Library.

She was predeceased by her husband, Maynard; her brother, James Stefin; and her parents.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Helene and Lewis Perry; her grandchildren, David Perry his wife, Clare, and Illysa Perry Izenberg and her husband, Noam; and five great-grandchildren, Jonah, Sayde and Nelia Perry and Zev and Benjamin Izenberg.
