1936 – 2013
MONMOUTH — Gerry Francis Sanborn, 77, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, Dec. 16, after a brief illness.
He was born in Lewiston on Feb. 27, 1936, the son of Kenneth Eugene and Laura (Gilman) Sanborn of Monmouth.
He lived in Monmouth his entire life. He graduated as valedictorian of his class at Monmouth Academy in 1954. He enlisted in the U.S. Army following graduation, serving his country for three years; he was stationed in Ingrandes, QM Depot, in France. Following his honorable discharge, he started the apprenticeship program at Bath Iron Works and continued his employment for 37 years, retiring from the fleet service engineering department in 1995.
Gerry was very active in Monmouth. He served as a volunteer fireman, as a member of the Lions Club, as Parent-Teachers Club president and on the Monmouth School Board, serving 12 years — several as vice chairman.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jessie (Chudy) Sanborn; daughters, Darlene Sanborn and her husband, Russell Stoddard, Kelly Webb and her fiancé, TJ Quinn, Deanna Sanborn and her friend, David Leeman, and Kristin Sanborn and her boyfriend, Jeffrey Howes; grandchildren, Dary and Joshua Stroup, Chelsea and Jenna Andrews, Abigail Webb and Corey Tatarka; and brothers, Dana E. Sanborn and Wayne M. Sanborn. He also enjoyed the company of his special cats, Smokey and Smudge.
