LEWISTON — A police report detailing what had initially been reported as a two-car fatal accident on Lisbon Street last week indicates a third driver may have started a chain reaction that triggered the crash.
According to the Dec. 19 accident report, Marcia Nadeau, 60, of Lewiston was driving her husband’s 2000 Ford sedan and pulled out of the Mobil station at 1930 Lisbon St. to make a left turn to head east toward Lisbon at 12:45 p.m.
Nadeau failed to yield the right of way and “appears to have pulled out into the westbound travel lane” causing Amy Merrill Ferguson, who was traveling in that westbound lane toward Lewiston, to swerve left and slightly over the centerline to avoid Nadeau’s car.
According to the report, Ferguson then swerved to the right to get back in the travel lane and appears to have overcorrected, traveling briefly into the shoulder before losing control and sliding sideways into the path of an oncoming GMC Yukon driven by Michael Yohe, 39, of Lisbon.
The impact, which happened in front of the South Lewiston Baptist Church, killed Ferguson, 39, of Lewiston.
According to a witness, who was driving toward Lisbon just ahead of Yohe’s vehicle, he saw Nadeau pulling out of the station and thought Ferguson was going to hit her, but Nadeau stopped short and Ferguson turned aggressively to avoid a collision.
Blood was drawn to test the blood alcohol level of all three drivers, which is standard in fatal accidents.
According to Lt. Michael McGonagle, police are continuing the investigation and when it is complete the material will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
There have so far been no charges in the accident.
On Tuesday, on behalf of his wife and himself, Phil Nadeau said, “She and I want to extend our deepest sympathies to Amy Ferguson’s family and our thoughts and prayers are with them and with the driver and passenger who were in the other vehicle.”
On Saturday night, friends and family held a candlelight memorial in honor of Ferguson, a mother of one daughter and grandmother to three. She had worked as a waitress at Denny’s restaurant for the past 10 years. As part of the vigil, friends placed a cross marking the scene of the accident.
Marcia Nadeau, who has no infractions on her driver’s license, was not injured.
Yohe and his passenger, Mark Leberge, both reported back pain and were treated at a Lewiston hospital. According to the accident report, both men were wearing seat belts.
In a separate incident, according to a crash report filed by Lewiston police early this week, Yohe was involved in a crash on Dec. 18.
According to that report, Yohe was driving outbound on Sabattus Street when he drove his 2004 BMW SUV off the road and struck a CMP pole at 2:30 p.m. He was not wearing a seat belt.
