The bridge was closed on Sunday after five or six cars were damaged by ice falling on to the roadway. It will remain closed until further notice, Talbot said.

Talbot added that the Maine Department of Transportation will consult with its chief engineers to figure out what might be done proactively to remove the remaining ice from the bridge. They will consider the option of using large equipment to knock the ice from the cables.

The Penobscot Narrows Bridge carries Route 1 traffic from Verona Island to Prospect. Alternate routes take motorists more than 20 miles out of their way, Talbot said.

No one was injured on Sunday as a result of ice falling off the bridge.
