Savvy Caregiver I, from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, Jan. 8 to Feb. 12. A workshop for family caregivers of people with dementia. Preregistration required.
Medication Brown Bag Clinic, 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Jan. 13. Fifteen-minute appointments are available; call to schedule. Instructor: David Kuwikamato, pharmacist. Bring meds or a list (prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, herbal, natural products) and the pharmacist will determine if there are negative effects from combining these medications.
Researching Your Family History, Wednesdays, Jan. 14, 21 and 28. Time choices: noon to 1 p.m., 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. or 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Instructor: Carroll N. Holmes, researcher. The instructor will work with each person individually using several genealogical websites to find people on one’s family tree.
Medicare Basics, 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15. Instructor: Roland Bussiere, SeniorsPlus. Learn the basics, sign-up time frames and ways to save money.
Beads!, 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16. Cost, $12 for materials. Instructor: Lisa MacDonald, local artisan. Create an 18-inch beaded necklace and set of matching earrings. Supplies and tools will be provided. Class size is limited; call if you need to cancel after registering.
Write a Note!, 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17. Instructor: Christine Richards, graphic designer. What it is you appreciate about the people you love? Is it their funny stories? The food they cook? Something about them that makes you swell with pride? Do they know how you feel? Sometimes it’s easier to tell them in a note, for any day, or even for Valentine’s Day. Handwriting assistance and supplies provided.
Your Legacy, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21. Instructor: Lee Price. Learn how to leave your family cherished possessions, such as stories about your life or the lives of people who went before you. How? Memoirs, family histories, timelines video or audio recordings, songs, paintings or quilts.
What’s Happening to My Body As It Ages?, Current Medical News, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23. Instructor: Alan Verrill, MD, CMMC. This will be a discussion about what we read and hear related to our health. For instance, do we benefit from taking a multi-vitamin? Since Dr. Verrill’s classes often have waiting lists, calling if you find you can’t come after you’ve registered, so the next person on the waiting list may attend.
The Rx for Cabin Fever, 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24. Instructor: Marylin Newell, Ph.D. Learn the symptoms and causes of cabin fever, choose from a number of easy-to-do home remedies and create a personal Rx for overcoming the negative thoughts and feelings that usually accompany cabin fever.
Ready, Set, Snow! Are You Ready?, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27. Instructor: Rayette Hudon, traffic safety specialist, public affairs and traffic safety, AAA. New tips as well the tried-and-true of how to prepare ourselves and our cars for winter driving, along with tips on how to drive on ice and snow.
Enhancing Quality of Life in Early Stage Alzheimer’s, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28. Instructor: Mark Pechenik, Alzheimer’s Association. Explore the Alzheimer’s Social Programs Project. This effort offers enjoyable, engaging social events, museum tours, writing groups to document life stories, snowshoe strolls and guided nature walks, all designed to help strengthen the quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their families.
Diabetes: Knowing Your Numbers, 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30. Instructor: Mercedes Peralta, RN, CDE, diabetes program coordinator, and Kate Gosselin, RD, CDE, Central Maine Endocrinology and Diabetes Center. Q&A session will follow the presentation.
Healthy Winter Snacks, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31. Instructor: Rebecca Dugan, St. Mary’s Nutrition Center. Sample healthy cold-weather snacks and get great recipes.
