Bottle drive to benefit SHAREcenter

AUBURN — There will be a bottle drive to benefit the SHAREcenter on Saturday, Jan. 4. To schedule a pick-up in the Lewiston-Auburn area, call 333-6671 or email Paula at [email protected].

Those wishing may drop bottles off at Wheeler’s Market, 107 South Main St., New Auburn, between Thursday and Saturday, mentioning that the money go toward supporting the SHAREcenter.

Schoolhouse open, meeting slated

POLAND — The Poland Historical Society old schoolhouse will be open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2. For more information, call- 998-4391.

Looking for volunteers to give out books

LEWISTON — Due to the popularity of last year’s event, Lewiston Public Library will once again participate in World Book Night, a global campaign to encourage reading by handing out free books.

The library is recruiting volunteers to hand out books (to be provided) at a special World Book Night event on April 23.

More information on becoming a volunteer book giver is available at www.lplonline.org/wbn2014. The deadline to apply is Sunday, Jan. 5.

Dempsey Center offers Kung-Fu for Kids

LEWISTON —  The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing is offering free Kung-Fu workshop for children ages 8 to 12. The six-week program will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 9 through Feb. 13, at the center, 29 Lowell St.

LEWISTON —  The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing will hold a free Tai Chi workshop for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “Tai Chi for Balance” will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 9 through Feb. 13, at the center, 29 Lowell St.

Instructor will be Toby Sifton. Registration is limited to 12.

Maine Savvy Caregiver 1 Training schedule

LEWISTON —  SeniorsPlus announces Savvy Caregiver 1 training scheduled in Androscoggin and Franklin counties.

Training will help family caregivers learn how to take care of themselves and reduce stress and also communicate more easily with a loved one to make days better.

It is a six-week workshop, with each session lasting two hours. The class is free, but preregistration is required. Call SeniorsPlus at 1-800-427-1241 to reserve a seat.

Cribbage League winners announced

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Lewiston Memorial Armory on Dec. 26 were: first, Vicki Thayer-Adams and Roger Labbe; second, Shirley Miller and Bert Chenard; third, Dennis Gosselin and Aaron Burke; fourth, Lorraine Fillion and Linda Williams.
