NORRIDGEWOCK — A man who was hit by a car while crossing U.S. Route 2 near his home in Norridgewock on Tuesday night died at the hospital.
Stanley Worthley, 70, was struck by a Toyota Highlander heading west at about 5 p.m., the Kennebec Journal reported Wednesday. Worthley had been visiting a neighbor across the road from his house.
The SUV was driven by William Young, 65, of Fayette, who was taken to Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan to be evaluated, police told the Kennebec Journal. According to police, speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Worthley was taken by LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he died.
According to the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, an average of 10 pedestrians are fatally struck by vehicles each year in the state. About two weeks ago, a Bangor-area transient, 43-year-old Larry Furbush, was the 10th pedestrian to be struck and killed by a motorist in 2013.
In that instance, Furbush apparently was caught underneath a New Brunswick driver’s SUV without the driver realizing, and was dragged about three-quarters of a mile to the parking lot of the Airport Mall Hannaford. Driver Darren Matheson, 48, discovered Furbush’s body when he got out of the vehicle, according to a prior BDN report.
