LEWISTON — A 37-year-old transient was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with robbing a local credit union.
Police responded to an emergency call at 10:15 a.m. at the Community Credit Union at 144 Pine St.
James McAllian was arrested at 2:45 p.m. in the Walmart parking lot in Auburn. He was charged with felony robbery and transported to Androscoggin County Jail, where he was booked and held in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.
Witnesses told police a man described as having a medium build and wearing a dark jacket and hat came into the credit union wearing a dark-colored bandanna over the lower part of his face. The man demanded money from a teller and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. No injuries were reported.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
