HERMON — A 47-year-old Hampden man was killed Monday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 95.
Thomas Ellingwood was the only person in the vehicle, a silver 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser, Trooper Michael Johnston of the Maine State Police said in a news release issued Monday evening.
According to Johnston, the accident happened about 2:45 p.m. in the southbound lanes, at mile marker 181 in Hermon.
As the vehicle was heading south, it traveled off the right side of the road, went down an embankment and rolled over multiple times, coming to a rest in the ditch along the interstate.
Johnson said police are still investigating where the vehicle left the roadway. He said police do not believe that any other vehicle was involved in the crash and that weather was not a factor.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by deputies from Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, fire and rescue personnel from the Hermon Fire Department and Bangor Fire Department and personnel from the Maine Department of Transportation.
The road remained open while the crash was investigated, however traffic was reduced to one lane for about an hour and a half.
The accident remains under investigation.
