1920 – 2014
LEWISTON — Sydney A. Rowe, 93, a resident of Skillings Corner Road in Auburn, died peacefully Saturday evening, Jan. 4, at Central Maine Medical Center, with his loving family by his side following a brief illness.
He was born in Lewiston on Nov. 23, 1920, the son of Anthony and Winifred (Thompson) Rowe. He was educated in local schools and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a quartermaster aboard the aircraft carrier USS Manila Bay.
Sydney was employed for 38 years by Central Maine Power, retiring at the age of 62. He was a longtime member of Tyrian Masonic Lodge No. 0073 of Mechanic Falls and a member of the Auburn Methodist Church. His hobbies included sailing, skiing, biking, woodworking and gardening. Sydney strongly believed in family, friends and faith.
Survivors include one son, Anthony Rowe, of Rumford; one daughter, Lynda Janelle and significant other, Kim Redmond, of Weld; five grandchildren, Dana and Sydney, as well as Jennifer, Kimberly and Michael; and five great-grandchildren, Fisher, Meagan, Emily, Logan and Mitchell.
Besides his wife, the former Elinor Austin, who died Oct. 7, 2010, he was predeceased by one sister, Helen; one brother, Anthony; and one great-grandson, Bailey.
