1944 – 2014

AUBURN — Linda Ann Smith was welcomed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior at the Androscoggin Hospice House on Monday, Jan. 6. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, after a valiant battle with a lung infection. She spent her last days surrounded by family and friends. She was the matriarch of the Smith family and was their teacher, mentor, confidant, supporter and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and auntie.

Linda was born on April 2, 1944, in Flint, Mich., a daughter of the late Russell E. and Jeannette (Hobbs) Gilman. She married Norman P. Smith on Dec. 11, 1961; they celebrated their 52nd anniversary while she was in the hospital. She attended Auburn schools and received her GED from Lewiston High School, after the birth of their son, Gregory.

She was very much in love with her family, and enjoyed every opportunity to be with them and cook for them during the holidays. She worked outside the home from time to time, but spent most of her life being a housewife and being a friend to all.

She loved to read, play games on her computer and attend the events of her grandchildren. She loved music. Singing and dancing were two of her favorite things; she would break into song at a moment’s notice.

Linda is survived by the love of her life, Norman; her son, Gregory and his wife, Claire, of Auburn; her daughter, Kimberly Walker and her husband, Dennis, of Bowdoin; her sister, Karla Roy and her husband, Dick, of Florida; grandsons, Nicholas and Joshua Walker, Bryan Kenney and his wife, Katie, and their son, Jackson, and Stephen Kenney and his partner, Sarah; a granddaughter, Hannah Smith; and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her closest childhood friend, Sheila Ferguson and her husband, Mark, and family; and her special girlfriends, Joanne Bonney, Bernice Rogers and Brenda Cadman.

She was predeceased by her in-laws, William and Virginia Smith.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and staff at Central Maine Medical Center and the Androscoggin Hospice House who were with Linda on her last journey on this earth.
