100 years ago, 1914
The churches of the two cities were well filled, Sunday, when “Every Man to Church” was the slogan. That the campaign of advertising from the pulpit, through the press and by other methods was a success can be demonstrated by the census taken in many of the parishes. The movement was started with special emphasis on the attempt to reach men. The men responded better than had been hoped for and in both cities in the greater part of the Protestant churches, more than half of the worshippers at yesterday’s services were men.
50 years ago, 1964
Two area residents were trapped in an elevator at the First Manufacturers National Bank on Park Street, Lewiston, yesterday afternoon when a power blackout period prevailed in the area. One report indicated that the elevator doors had to be pried open manually to release the occupants from the cubicle. The couple was in the elevator for less than five minutes.
25 years ago, 1989
The Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department will not seek charges against three inmates a the county jail who were the apparent instigators of a disturbance on the lower level of the jail Sunday night, according to Chief Deputy Andre Gagne. “I don’t think their intent was to damage anything, and I don’t think their intent was to burn anything,” he said. “No one was hurt, and nothing was damaged.”
