1933 – 2014

FREEPORT — Carl Raymond Condon, 80, of Freeport and Fort Myers Beach, Fla., made his transition on Friday, Jan. 10, at 5:19 p.m. He passed peacefully at home with loved ones at his side.

He was born in South West Bend in Durham at the Brown family farm on Dec. 3, 1933, to parents Osborne William Condon and Esther Mae Brown. As the firstborn, he spent his early childhood just “up the bend” and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1952. He married Alice Ann Dogan of Freeport the same year.

A carpenter by trade, he built their home in Freeport, where they had five children. Always industrious, he worked many jobs including reserve police officer in Freeport for 14 years and deputy sheriff for Cumberland County for five years. He did this all while continuing his family gardening tradition and attending college at the University of Southern Maine. He worked for E.E. Taylor and Central Maine Power for many years, before he and his wife became residential landlords in the Portland and Freeport area.

He was a 4-H leader, played baseball for the Spruce Tree League and outfield for the Durham Red Sox. He was a member of the Eureka Grange in Durham for 50 years and master of the Grange from 1950 to 1954. Additionally, he was a member of the Freeport Masonic Lodge for more than 30 years.

As head of his own family, he was committed to the Freeport community and spent years coaching Little League and supporting the high school band boosters. Carl and Alice loved being in the outdoors, spending time fishing and hunting. Camping with family and friends made the time even more enjoyable. As retirement neared, they began to spend more time at Sebago Lake and Fort Myers Beach, Fla.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Alice, who has been his devoted companion and caregiver since his numerous strokes in the past decade. He chose to meet life and death head-on. As one physical therapist said, “I have never met a man more determined.” Through grit and determination, he overcame many obstacles. Throughout it all, he never lost his enthusiasm for life and always had a joke and a wink at hand.

Surviving siblings include his sister, Nancy Carter and her husband, Ralph, of Auburn; his brothers, Freeman and his wife, Carolee, of Durham, and Randy Miller and his wife, Angie, also of Durham.

His surviving children are Carl O. Condon of Durham, Cathy Campbell and her husband, Mike, of Cumberland, Cliff Condon and his wife, Nancy, of Saco, and Cherie Gustafson and her husband, Asbjorn, and their two children, Oscar and Matilda, of Cape Elizabeth. He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by his parents; his daughter, Cheryl Ann; his granddaughter, Beth Ann; and sister, Esther Mae Routhier.
