Outside, a winter wonder-land of snow … inside, spring comes into being in a profusion of colorful flowers. This describes the scene at the Lewiston Memorial Armory as the Maine State Florists Association presents its annual flower show, in conjunction with the Agricultural Trades Show. Under the direction of Antonin Ducharme of Dube’s Flower Shop, Lewiston, the display of flowers this year is outstandingly beautiful. The designs become more elaborate and more colorful each year. Two skiers were shown skimming along a hill of white poms complete with t-bar. One of the biggest displays was entitled “More Worlds to Conquer” resembling an exotic jungle.

Up to 100 tons per day of the city’s solid waste could be heading to the Bangor area in the next few months to be burned at an incinerator owned by KTI Energy Inc. The City Council is scheduled to consider at its meeting Tuesday whether to authorize spending $145,000 to transport 5,525 tons of waste to the Penobscot Energy Recovery Co. incinerator in Orrington. The disposal fee at the PERC incinerator would be $15 per ton of waste, according to City Engineer and Public Works Director Christopher C. Branch. Even with the fee the city would have to pay a private hauler to take most of the 100 tons of waste per day to PERC, the cost of disposal to the city would be only about $25 per ton, he wrote in a memo.
