LEWISTON — The “Exploring Class Issues” series in the Lewiston-Auburn area will continue with the showing of the film, “American Winter” at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the B Street Community Center, 57 Birch St.
The series is sponsored by a statewide organization, No Class; the event will include a discussion following the film. The film showing is free.
“American Winter” demonstrates the struggles of working people to get by in the “New America,” where low pay, long working hours and financial insecurity are the norm for so many in this country, including Androscoggin County.
It looks intimately at individuals affected by the 2008 economic collapse and how they are coping. It also analyzes what can be done to end the loss of economic security so many still face more than five years after economic collapse.
“American Winter” has been described this way by The Nation magazine: “Finally, a movie has arrived that shows the precariousness of the U.S. economy for the majority of Americans, refusing to distinguish between a deserving and non-deserving poor.” The film was chosen Best Documentary Feature at the 36th annual Portland (Ore.) International Film Festival last year.
No Class is a statewide group that has as its goal the reduction and ending of class discrimination in Maine. It plans to do similar programs in other parts of Maine in the coming months.
The public is invited and admission is free, though donations are welcome. In case of hazardous driving weather, the program will be rescheduled for Sunday, Jan. 26, same time and place.
