GPS for the Journey Through Senior Healthcare: Finding care and support for an elderly loved one, especially when you find yourself in crisis, can be a bit like finding your way through New York City without a road map. Let us assist you in finding your way through the maze of assisted living, residential care and more. Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. $5.
Retirement 101: How to Get Maximum Enjoyment From Your Retirement, Part I: Retirement can be the best time in your life. Prepare yourself, make a bucket list and many other relevant issues. For people who are retired or thinking about it. Topics to be covered: 1. Starting Off on the Right Foot – What to expect, and how to avoid the pitfalls. 2. To Work or Not to Work – What are the options? 3. Your Bucket List – What’s the point of making a bucket list? 4. Basic Resources – Time, money and health and how they interact. 5. Living Quarters – What are your residential needs? 6. Social Changes – the changing need for social interaction. This course meets Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. for six weeks, starting Feb. 6. $50.
Will You Be Able to Retire? Learn why the rich are getting richer. Discover the concepts they use. A book on how money works will be given to every student. The book covers the concepts discussed. 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3. $10.
Sea Vegetables for Taste and Nutrition: Maine is home to some of the world’s most delicious sea vegetables. How do we use them to benefit our bodies and taste great? Learn how to prepare and enjoy delicious dishes with plenty of sea vegetables in them. Learn to incorporate these healthy and delicious vegetables into everyday dishes from salads to desserts. Supply fee of $15 payable to instructor. Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Cost $25.
Basic karate: Learn the basics of Isshin-Ryu Karate, an Okinawan style of karate. Learn basic kicks and punches and blocks. This course will get you ready for your yellow belt. The dojo is at 1000 Minot Ave. This course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for eight weeks beginning Feb. 4. $65
Middle Eastern dance (belly dance): Are you looking for a fun, new way to get some exercise? Learn basic moves, hear some of the history behind the dance and get the chance to meet other women in the community. No prior dance experience needed. Cardmaking and Stamping By Design: Have fun with the art of cardmaking. Learn all the best features of stamps, inks, tools and techniques in paperfolding, stamping and design. Complete three cards weekly. This course meets Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. for six weeks starting Feb. 13. $25, plus $15 supply fee.
Insight into beekeeping: Provide information to anyone considering the hobby of keeping honeybees, to help them decide if beekeeping is right for them. Covering start up costs, equipment, time commitment, diseases and a glimpse of a year of beekeeping. Thursday, Feb. 11, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. $12.
Fly tying: An experienced master will cover all aspects of fly tying, including dries, wets, streams, and nymphs, as well as successful fishing techniques. Class geared for beginning to intermediate students. This course meets Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. for eight weeks starting Feb. 3. $50, plus $25 supply fee.
Home Gardening: A Year-Round Adventure with Vegetables: Curious how farm markets sell fresh, locally produced produce when there is snow on the ground? This is the course for you. This will be a four-session course focusing on home vegetable production. Most Maine gardeners focus on a five- to six-month growing period, but with proper training the season can be extended to 8, 9 or even 12 months per year. Designed for beginners to expert, every attendee will increase their skill level and learn new techniques to increase production, extend the season,and learn new varieties and methods to grow their own food. This course meets Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for four weeks starting Feb. 6. $35.
