A man wanted in connection with a shooting in Gardiner was arrested in Massachusetts early Friday morning, according to officials.

Paul Coyne, 32, who had seven active warrants for his arrest, is allegedly responsible for a shooting in Gardiner that left a man with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Scott Fish of the Maine Department of Corrections confirmed Coyne was arrested around 2 a.m. Friday.

“One of our probation officers developed information that Mr. Coyne was in Massachusetts,” said Fish. “We contacted the Massachusetts State Police Fugitive Unit who worked diligently through the night.”

Coyne and his girlfriend, Martha Brown, 21, and a relative, Michael Coyne, 32, were taken into custody in Lynn, Mass., Gardiner Police Chief James Toman said.

A handgun and drugs were recovered in the vehicle they were in, according to Toman. It’s unclear whether the weapon recovered was the one used in Thursday’s shooting.

Toman said Coyne had been on the run with Brown.

Coyne eluded police Thursday after an early-morning shooting with a handgun, according to Toman. The victim is expected to recover.

Coyne has three warrants out of Kennebec County for failing to pay fines, others out of Lincoln and Somerset counties for failing to appear and two additional sealed affidavit warrants out of Somerset County Superior Court, Toman said.

Coyne is expected to be charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, aggravated assault and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon by Gardiner police, Toman said.

In addition to those charges, Coyne, his relative and Brown also face drug and weapons charges in Massachusetts, Toman said.
