It’s amazing how quickly the Norway Savings Bank Arena has become an established part of our community.

But the official recognition of that fact occurs this weekend with a grand opening and open house.

That means it’s time for an official nod to the major players responsible for this addition to the recreational assets of our two towns.

First, of course, credit goes to the youth hockey organizations that came up with this idea when they were iced out of Lewiston’s Colisee. Undaunted, they chose to help build their own place to skate.

Second, cheers to the Auburn City Council for picking up the ball and working out a deal that has the least downside risk for Auburn taxpayers.

Third, to George Schott, developer and landlord of the new facility, who made a host of concessions to make the project possible.

Fourth, to Norway Savings Bank for picking up major sponsorship of the facility.

Finally, to the residents of Auburn, who, it must be said, have taken a calculated risk that the financials for this project will work out as projected. Yes, our fingers are crossed.

The facility will help continue the strong tradition of youth hockey in our area, it will provide recreation and physical fitness for thousands of young people and spunky adults, plus draw business and visitors to the area … which does include Mr. Schott’s hotel and other nearby interests.

It is a public-private partnership that benefits all. Remember, business development and growth are directly linked to local amenities like this.
