Community leaders are pushing to expand the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport, a move that could cost taxpayers several million dollars, the Lewiston Journal reported Friday. The officials say they hope to attract a major commercial cargo hauler and that to do so they need to lengthen the airport’s runway by 1,500 to 6,500 feet and to build a reinforced tarmac to accommodate large cargo planes. About 15 officials from Lewiston and Auburn met Thursday for a strategy session called by the Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce regarding the airport. Those attending agreed that the airport must change in order to play a role in the cities’ economic development and that funding should be sought to turn the airport into a freight forwarding center.
