LEWISTON — A 12-year-old girl claimed that a man tried to abduct her from Sabattus Street Saturday morning, but police say she made it up.

Lewiston Police Sgt. Michael Whalen said the girl claimed she was walking home from the store when a man pulled up and tried to force her into his vehicle. She said she fought him off and ran back home.

Police canvased the area and called other local police departments to notify them about the kidnap attempt. Media outlets began reporting on the incident.

But within a couple of hours, as interviews with the girl continued, police discovered she had made it up.

No charges are pending.
