LEWISTON — Laura Grego, senior scientist with the Union for Concerned Scientists, pointed out several errors made by the Sun Journal in a story published Thursday on Page A1 about her talk at Bates College. In Grego’s words:

1. “No one is considering putting nuclear weapons in Maine. A site in Western Maine is a contender for a new ‘missile defense site.’  These are not nuclear weapons.”

2. “It is also missile defenses that have not been tested in a real world scenario, not nuclear weapons.”

3. “I certainly didn’t say that there are more nuclear weapons than ever or that things are much worse than during the Cold War. I used the fact that it was the 50th anniversary of the release of Dr. Strangelove to say that things had vastly improved since the hysteria of the Cold War, but that there still is some way to go.”
